Windows services seem to come in three start-up types:

Jul 23, 2015 Hi I noticed that some services of Windows 10 Preview although I set them on Manual, they are automatically set to 'Manual (trigger start'. What is the difference between these two startup modes? Lastly, with these services, how do I set them to the first startup mode without that they are. Trigger start. Some event triggers it and turns on.
What is the difference between the latter two?

Manual means that the service will start only when Windows or another service needs it, or if you invoke something to start the service. You can use the command
net start servicename from the command line to enable a manual service. When you reboot, the service will again be off until you restart it.
Disabled, on the other hand, means that the service will stay off, regardless of whether you try to start it or not. Other services or applications which depend on the disabled service may fail.
See the MSFN discussion thread on Manual vs. Disabled for more info.

The only difference between manual and automatic is that in the case of automatic the operating system itself starts the service after boot up, whereas in the case of manual the service is only started when called upon by another service or program.
If you have no need of the service at all, you have to disable it. Telephony seems to be one of those services that always wants to start up even when you seemingly have nothing that uses it, and the system would always complain if you disabled it. They seem to have fixed that problem in Vista, and they may have fixed it XP/SP3.

Hi All,
I'm using Windows 10 Home (1607) on my DELL Inspiron 7000 Series laptop.
I'm currently and temporarily living in a country in Asia in which the only ISP options have data caps (and are ultimately expensive), and for this I need to prevent Windows Update from downloading stuff. When I arrived here I managed to stop Windows Update altogether by simply disabling the following services:
- Windows Update

Tech Tip: If you are having trouble deciding which is the right driver, try the Driver Update Utility for Microsoft eHome Infrared Transceiver. It is a software utility that will find the right driver for you - automatically. DriverGuide maintains an extensive archive of Windows drivers available for free download. We employ a team from around. The EHome Infrared Receiver (USBCIR) service is a kernel mode driver. If EHome Infrared Receiver (USBCIR) fails to start, the error is logged. Windows 10 startup proceeds, but a message box is displayed informing you that the usbcir service has failed to start. - Windows Modules Installer (not entirely necessary to prevent Windows Update to download stuff, but it triggered some process that load my CPU at 100%, which drove me crazy).
After several months of not receiving any updates (which is what I wanted) I was giving my brother support and I needed to download some updates on my PC to show him an example. I don't know which updates it downloaded and I don't know if it updated my Windows version (I have 1607 now, don't know what I had before), all I know is that now Windows Update prompts me to download Windows Creators Update (1703), so that's where I'm at in terms of updates.
THE PROBLEM: After doing the mentioned update I wanted to go back to the no updates at all situation, so I proceeded to stop and disable the services again. To my surprise, on the following day I found Windows Update half the way to completely downloading version 1703, which I cancelled. When I checked services.msc, I found out that such services had been put in Manual, and were running. Even more, when I stopped and disabled the services, some process called Service Host: Local Service carried on downloading I don't know what, at the full speed of my internet connections, and I only managed to stop that by rebooting my PC (something I'm not very fan of).
MY QUESTION: I need to know why services now enable themselves and I need a bulletproof solution to stop Windows Update altogether.
FYI 1, I know about the Metered Connection option, but I don't want to use it, since I don't know what else would affect (I need all other services to run at full speed, specially everything related to video streaming). Moreover, I want to stop Windows Update at all, not for just one WiFi network. I want to be able to fully control whether or not Windows Update downloads and installs updates, just as I was before.
FYI 2, doing some googling I learned that Windows Update service depends on Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) service and I disabled that one too. When I found Windows Updated running I noticed that this service had been put on Automatic (Delayed Start).
FYI 3, I managed to enable gpedit.msc (disabled in Home version by default) and I edited the global policy to disable Windows Update, but I don't know if this will work, I'll find out tomorrow by the time Windows Update fires up on its own. Actually. To be honest, I don't know if changes here affect Windows Home at all.
